The National Sports Museum located at the MCG in Melbourne is holding an exhibition “Gold for Australia! Stories of our sporting medals” which brings together more than 500 medals from a huge range of sports, eras and levels in order to investigate why medals play such an important part of the material culture of sport. The doors will open to the public on Monday 19 May 2014 and the exhibition will be on display through to 31 March 2015; it includes prize medals from as early as 1862 through to the present day, a range of honour medals including civic awards, war medals and bravery awards relating to sport, and commemorative medals (some of which will be familiar to many collectors), as well as a very healthy dose of gold!
